Interface Manipulation
Hard-to-Close
The close button exists. Technically. At 7 pixels. In low contrast.
What is it?
A modal, popup, or overlay makes the dismiss action deliberately hard to find or click — tiny target, low contrast, outside viewport, or hidden behind motion.
How it works
The pattern changes the cost of thinking. It makes the preferred action immediate, emotionally charged, or visually dominant, while making the more reflective action slower, duller, or easier to doubt.
Visual Example
A simplified specimen designed to make the pattern recognizable at a glance.

Real World Example
- A newsletter modal places the X in low-contrast grey outside the visible area on mobile.
- A cookie banner offers no close button, only a tiny text link among paragraphs.
Origin: Newsletter popups, cookie banners, app-install interstitials, and ecommerce overlays.
Ethical Alternative
Make close buttons at least 44×44px, high-contrast, and placed in a predictable location.
